The Significance of Good Friday in a Christian’s journey. 

Every believer always look forward to celebrating easter but it is not every believer who truly understands the prequel to the easter celebration. Before the resurrection of Christ on easter Sunday thousands of years ago, there was first his crucifixion. 

Today, so many teachings focus on just his resurrection and forget that his death is as equally important. Without Christ’s death, there would have been no resurrection. In other words, without Good Friday, Easter would never have existed. Still, there is so much more significance attached to this Friday than just birthing Easter. 

1. Good Friday began the Christian Journey. 

2 Corinthians 5 v 17 says – “If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature. Old things have passed away and all things have become new”. For a man to be in Christ, he must be born again. When Jesus was crucified on the cross at Calvary, he began the process to being born again and living in him. 

He took all our sins and died with it. Hebrews 9 v 22 days “Without the shedding of blood, there is no remission of sins”. Simply put, if his blood had not been shed for us on Calvary, we would still be bearing our sins and there would have been no Christian life. 

2. Good Friday assures of Victory over trials.

There are people who believe the Christian life is a soft life, without any form of problem. They believe since Jesus is our personal lord and savior, life is supposed to be a bed of roses. However, Jesus was beaten and bruised for our sake on the way to Calvary. 

The King of the world was treated like a slave for our sake and yet, you think you can be free from troubles? No. Every Christian would definitely go through several troubles and trials during their lifetime. However, we are assured of Victory because Christ suffered on Good Friday for us but came out victorious. In fact, Psalm 34 v 19 says “Many are the afflictions of the righteous :But the LORD delivereth him out of them all.”

3. Good Friday Bring Divine Health

By virtue of Good Friday, every believer is supposed to be living a life free from sickness. This is based on the word of GOD in Isaiah 53 v 5. According to this scripture, “He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon him, And by His stripes, we are healed.” Healing is one of GODs several gifts to man and Good Friday affirms this gift. 

Jesus converted all his lashes into any form of sickness the world has experienced, is experiencing or will still experience. Little wonder why people are getting healed of terminal diseases like Cancer. In fact, several people got healed from COVID-19 when this disease was on rampage in 2020. This was a disease that had no cure yet, people were made whole. 

4. Good Friday Open Direct access to GOD the Father. 

Matthew 27 v 51 says “Behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent.” The death of Christ eliminated the need for a Priest to communicate with GOD on behalf of believers as was the practice in the Old Testament. For instance, GOD only spoke to the children of Israel through Moses. 

However, Christ came that we may have direct access to the Father. Bible scholars have stated that the temple curtain being torn into two signifies the power we now have through Jesus to reach GOD directly. He confirms this in John 14 v 6 which says “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the father except through me.”

5. Good Friday pointing to Obedience and Humility Lifestyle of believers

These are two very important themes of Good Friday. Have you ever imagined how hard it must have been for the creator to be beaten by his creations? To put it in a clearer perspective, imagine you built a couple of robots to attend to your everyday needs. Then on a certain day, some people broke into your home and decided to reprogram your robots to beat you. However, you were given two options ; Allow them to beat you or burn them into pieces. What would you do? Remember robots are made of metals and they would cause serious damage to your skin. That was exactly how Jesus was beaten with rods, sticks and every other thing that actually damaged his skin. Yet, he obeyed the father until the point of death– “Not my will, but thy will be done.”

Death on the cross was the most shameful kind of death at that period. It was meant for criminals and thugs yet Christ was humble enough to accept it on our behalf. What manner of humility could make a GOD leave the comfort and glitter of his throne to be beaten by mere mortals? It is always surprising whenever a Christian think being proud or disobedient is the right way to go. Christ already set the standard of  obedience and humility for us to follow and there is no other higher standard. 

6. Good Friday Display the greatest Love 

The final piece of the puzzle and the biggest reason he died for us. This is rooted in John 3 v 16 –“For GOD so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son so that whosoever believeth in him will not perish but have everlasting life.”  The scripture also says “While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us”. If not for the love he had for us, there was no one who could have compelled him to die for us. ”What manner of love is this that a man laid down his life for his friend.” 

The reflection of significant of good Friday In a Christian life 

Good Friday is a solemn day for Christians as it is the day when Jesus Christ was crucified on the cross. As such, there are certain things that Christians commonly do on this day to commemorate the event and reflect on its significance.

Attend Church Services: Christians usually attend church services on Good Friday. Many churches hold special services to mark the occasion, such as the Stations of the Cross or the Seven Last Words of Christ. These services provide an opportunity for Christians to meditate on the events leading up to Christ’s crucifixion.

Fast and Abstain: Good Friday is a day of fasting and abstinence for many Christians. This means that they refrain from eating meat and limit their food intake. Fasting is a way of expressing solidarity with Christ, who suffered and died for our sins.

Read the Bible: Christians may spend time reading the Bible on Good Friday. They may read the accounts of Christ’s passion, such as the Gospel of Matthew, or the prophecies about the coming of the Messiah in the Old Testament.

Participate in Communion: Some Christian denominations observe Communion on Good Friday. This is a way of remembering Christ’s sacrifice and the new covenant that he established with his followers.

Reflect and Pray: Good Friday is a day for reflection and prayer. Christians may spend time in silent meditation, contemplating the significance of Christ’s sacrifice and the meaning of their own faith. They may also offer prayers for the world, for those in need, and for themselves.

These practices help Christians to remember the significance of good Friday in their Christians life and Christ’s sacrifice to deepen their faith.

Without a doubt, it is evident that Good Friday should be taken with more vigor and passion by Christians. Good Friday should be a period to reflect, think and share the love of Christ to others in all obedience, humility and love.  Happy Good Friday!
